The flagship Field Service conference, held annually in Palm Springs, is the largest gathering of field service industry experts in the world. At this year's event, Trimble hosted a collaboration workshop focusing on trends in the market, as well as a demonstration of our recently announced Trimble PULSE ® Remote Expert Augmented Reality (AR) app at the innovation theatre.
The Field Service industry is at the focal point of many major IT trends that are all converging. While this is exciting to be a part of, it can often be difficult to parse out which use cases are applicable and which ones will have the most value. In our session, we looked at the trends in three key time horizons:
- The first are established trends, which for the most part are well understood with technology applications readily available. These include workflow standardization and mobility.
- Building on these are the emerging trends, which are process optimization and connected assets/IoT.
- Finally, there are the future trends which include Big Data and Machine Learning.
During the workshop many of the questions and discussions focused on how to build on previous technology deployments and how to adopt new applications successfully.
New at this year's event was the Innovation Theatre which was a chance for attendees to learn more about a specific product or application. The sessions only lasted 10 minutes and the interactive format lent to some fast-moving discussions. We demonstrated our recently-released Trimble PULSE Remote Expert app which generated lots of questions and interest. The audience seemed to appreciate that the app is free, can be deployed quickly with no large, upfront investment in headsets (the application runs on most iOS enabled devices), and has a simple and intuitive user interface that requires little, if any, training before using.

This is my third time attending the Field Service Palm Springs conference and the level of collaboration was exciting to see. Many of the people who stopped by the Trimble booth were most interested in learning from their peers and applying best practices. In our workshop we generated a word cloud based on the feedback from our attendees and "Learn" was the most common response. This seemed fitting as there is a lot of innovation in this market and learning from others is the best way to keep ahead.
